What we do
A CPD-based primary science teaching support service
ABC Science CIO offers 200+ hands-on experiments and demonstrations in kits, delivered termly, plus 50+ digital VR and AR lessons available anytime to schools and educators in the Midlands.
Training in your school
Hands-on CPD three times per year with cover funded so that this isn’t a barrier to attending.
Digital lab, VR & AR
A virtual laboratory and 50+ immersive lessons your class can visit any time.
Why this model exists
The gap Ofsted identified in primary science
Ofsted’s report Successful Science (January 2011) found that “there are areas that need further improvement, especially in primary schools”, and that “the most important focus for schools is to ensure that pupils are engaged and challenged by their work in science, particularly in scientific investigation and how science works.”
It also found that primary teachers’ take-up of science-specific CPD was low, and that in just under two thirds of the primary schools where science-specific CPD was evaluated, it was “no better than satisfactory”. With local authority advisory services much reduced, schools have far fewer places to turn for subject-specific support.
How we answer it
Ofsted’s three recommendations, built into our service
- Practical enquiry for every year group — 200+ experiments and demonstrations so pupils develop enquiry skills, not just knowledge.
- Effective, sustained CPD — hands-on training three times a year that builds teacher confidence, subject knowledge and skills.
- Support for the science lead — a complete, balanced programme of work that underpins planning and coordination across the school.

The challenge
“Science is a challenging subject to teach — especially if you haven’t got a degree in it.”
- Most schemes of work are not designed to inspire future scientists.
- 91% – 95% of primary teachers are non-subject specialist teachers.
- 90%+ of primary teachers had a poor experience of science at secondary school.
- Two weeks maximum of university time on science during a PGCE.
- Little access to exciting science kit.
- Sporadic science teaching and learning support.
- Assessment of the development of practical science skills needs support.
The outcome: very few exciting science lessons across six years of primary school — and thousands of potential young scientists never inspired.
